Who teaches

One tutor, one student, and a director trained in math education

Genius Prep is run by Lance DeRatafia, its director, who holds an MA in Adolescent Mathematics Education. Every session is private: your child works with a Genius Prep tutor, never in a group. If you want Lance himself, Lance Lessons are one-on-one lessons with him, at $180 a session.

The method is the one Genius Prep has used since 2016: incentive-based learning, which rewards effort, consistency and improvement rather than test scores alone. A child who feels recognized for trying hard tries harder.

One session can cover math and another subject at no extra charge, if homework in a second subject is also piling up.

What we work on, grade by grade

Your tutor gives each session to your child’s most pressing need, from this week’s homework to what the diagnostic shows is missing underneath it. What each grade covers below is what New York State sets for it, in the Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards.

Grades K–3

Early math

$100 per session

  • Kindergarten: a sound sense of numbers: counting, representing and comparing them, first with objects; shapes and where things are in space.
  • Grades 1–2: addition and subtraction within 20, then fluency; place value, tens and ones, then base-ten numbers; measuring lengths with standard units.
  • Grade 3: multiplication and division within 100, first fractions (unit fractions), area, and polygons by their sides and vertices.

Grades 4–8

Upper elementary and middle school

$125 per session

  • Grades 4–5: multi-digit multiplication and division, fractions (equivalence, adding, multiplying and dividing in simple cases), decimals to hundredths, volume.
  • Grades 6–7: ratios and rates, negative numbers, expressions and equations, proportional relationships, probability and statistics.
  • Grade 8: linear equations and systems of equations, functions, and geometry with the Pythagorean Theorem.

Grades 9–12

High school

$125 per session

  • Regents courses: Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II, the three math courses with a New York State Regents exam, during the year and before the exam.
  • After them: the advanced coursework that follows, at the same session rate.
  • College admissions: the math section of the SAT, in the same one-on-one sessions.

How it works, and what you receive

  1. A diagnostic, $150 (1.5 hours). A baseline and a skill-gap analysis, so the work starts where your child actually is rather than where the report card says.
  2. A written plan. A personalized study plan and timeline: which topics, in which order, and how often.
  3. One-on-one sessions. $100 for K–3, $125 for grades 4–12, at 928 Broadway or by video call.
  4. A written report after every session. What was studied and the next steps, so you know what happened without asking your child.
  5. Pay per session. No package, no contract, no minimum. You can stop when you’re ready.

After every session, parents receive a detailed written report covering what was studied and next steps.

In person or online?

Both. Sessions are at our 928 Broadway location in the Flatiron District, or by video call from anywhere. Hours: Mon – Fri 2:30 PM – 6:30 PM, Saturday 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM.

Preparing for a math exam rather than keeping up in class? The Regents have a page per course: Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II, with all ten exams on the Regents tutoring page. For admissions tests, see SHSAT prep and SAT prep.

A sentence is enough: the class, the topic, the last test. We start with a diagnostic so the sessions fit the gap rather than the calendar.
