SSAT Prep in NYC — one-on-one, and built around the penalty
The SSAT is not the ISEE with a different name. On the Middle and Upper Levels it subtracts a quarter of a point for every wrong answer, it asks analogies the ISEE never asks, and its levels follow your child's current grade rather than the grade they are applying to. We prepare students for the test they are actually sitting.

SSAT or ISEE? Seven differences that actually change the prep
Most NYC independent day schools read either test, so for a city-only list your child genuinely has a choice. Add a New England boarding school and the SSAT usually becomes the expected test. Always confirm on each school's own admissions page — policies change year to year.

Understanding the Test
The three SSAT levels
The SSAT level follows the grade your child is in now. This is the opposite of the ISEE, whose level follows the grade being applied to — and it is the single detail families preparing both tests get wrong most often.
Elementary Level
Current Grades 3 – 4
Applying to Grades 4 – 5. Shorter test, and the only level with no penalty for a wrong answer — so on this level, a child should never leave a question blank.
Middle Level
Current Grades 5 – 7
Applying to Grades 6 – 8. Same structure as the Upper Level, scored against other students in the same grade.
Upper Level
Current Grades 8 – 11
Applying to Grades 9 – 12. The level most NYC families sit for independent day schools and for boarding school applications.
Verbal
Synonyms and analogies. The analogies are the part that surprises families coming from the ISEE — the ISEE has none. They test relationships between words, not just vocabulary.
Quantitative
Two math sections rather than one. Grade-level arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data — tested twice, at different points in the test, so stamina matters.
Reading
Passages drawn from fiction, poetry, humanities and science, with questions on main idea, inference, tone and argument.
Writing Sample
Not scored. It is sent to the schools you choose as score recipients, and admissions officers read it. Treat it as a piece of the application, not as a warm-up.
Experimental Section
The SSAT often ends with a section that is neither scored nor reported — it is used to validate future questions. Students who do not know this burn energy on it.
Scoring
A wrong answer costs a quarter of a point
On the Middle and Upper Levels, E3n awards a point for a correct answer, subtracts a quarter of a point for an incorrect one, and does nothing at all for a question left blank. It sounds like a footnote. It is the reason two students with identical knowledge can finish two stanines apart.

Nothing added, nothing taken away — which is why an unfounded guess is not free on the Middle and Upper Levels.
What we teach from this: eliminate before you guess. With two choices ruled out, answering is worth it on average; with none ruled out, it is not. Students arrive at their first session guessing on everything, because that is the correct strategy on the ISEE, the SAT and every school test they have ever taken.

Three ways to sit it, three different rules
The SSAT testing year runs from August 1 to July 31, and each format carries its own cap on how many times your child can sit it inside that year.

A full-length, timed SSAT. We break the result down by section and question type, and we tell you plainly whether your child should sit the SSAT, the ISEE, or both. Families applying only to NYC day schools often have a real choice; families adding boarding schools usually do not.
A plan built around the penalty
On the Middle and Upper Levels, a wrong answer costs a quarter point. That single rule changes what we teach: which questions to attempt, when eliminating two choices makes a guess worth it, and when to leave a blank. Most students arrive guessing on everything.
Analogies, twice-tested math, and stamina
Sessions target the three places SSAT scores are actually lost: analogies (which nothing in school teaches), the second quantitative section, where fatigue shows, and reading passages drawn from poetry and fiction rather than textbook prose.
Timed mocks, tracked to the target

SSAT tutoring across New York City
In person at 928 Broadway in the Flatiron District, or live online. Where you live changes which schools are on the list and how far your child travels — it does not change the program.
SSAT test prep — Upper East Side
The heaviest SSAT demand in the city, and the most double-testing: UES families are usually applying to several independent day schools that read the ISEE alongside boarding schools that expect the SSAT. We start by settling the school list, because it decides whether your child sits one test or two.
SSAT test prep — Upper West Side
West Side applicants often come to us after a first sitting that went badly for one reason — they guessed their way through the Middle or Upper Level and gave back points to the quarter-point penalty. That is a fixable, teachable problem, and it usually moves a score quickly.
SSAT test prep — Tribeca & Downtown
Downtown families apply the widest: uptown day schools, Brooklyn campuses, and New England boarding schools. The SSAT is the test that travels across all three, which is why it is often the right single test for a downtown list. Our Flatiron studio is a short ride up the 1 or the 6.
SSAT test prep — Flatiron, Chelsea & Greenwich Village
Our home turf. 928 Broadway sits on the 23rd Street (N/R/W/6) and Union Square (4/5/6/L/N/Q/R/W) lines, so in-person SSAT sessions cost these families almost no travel time.
SSAT test prep — Brooklyn
Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, Williamsburg and Fort Greene send a growing share of both the Manhattan day-school pool and the boarding school pool. In person on the 4/5/6 and N/R, or fully live online.
SSAT test prep — The Bronx, Queens & Staten Island
Riverdale and Fieldston applicants in the Bronx, Forest Hills and Bayside in Queens, and Staten Island families for whom in person means a ferry. Live online SSAT prep removes the commute without changing a single thing about the program.
On cost: private test-prep tutoring in New York runs roughly $150 to $400+ per hour. SSAT prep here is $125 per session after a one-time $150 diagnostic, billed session by session. Should my child take the SSAT or the ISEE?
It depends on the school list. Most NYC independent day schools accept either, so if your child is only applying in the city, you have a genuine choice and should sit the one their diagnostic favors. If the list includes New England boarding schools, the SSAT is normally the expected test, which settles it. The tests reward different things: the SSAT has analogies and subtracts a quarter point for a wrong answer on the Middle and Upper Levels, while the ISEE has sentence completions and no penalty at all. We run a diagnostic before recommending one — and we always tell you to confirm each school’s current policy on its own admissions page.
Is there really a penalty for guessing on the SSAT?
On the Middle and Upper Levels, yes. E3n awards one point for a correct answer, subtracts a quarter of a point for an incorrect one, and neither adds nor subtracts for a question left blank. The Elementary Level has no penalty. This is the single biggest strategic difference from the ISEE, which never penalises a wrong answer — and it is why a student who has prepped for the ISEE and then sits the SSAT cold usually underperforms.
How many times can my child take the SSAT?
The SSAT testing year runs from August 1 to July 31. Within it, Middle and Upper Level students can take up to six paper Standard tests plus one Flex test. SSAT at Home is limited to one per testing year, and the Prometric test center option is currently one per year, which E3n has said will move to two. Elementary Level students can take three tests in total — two Standard and one Flex. That is far more room than the ISEE allows, which is capped at once per testing season.
What are the SSAT levels, and which one does my child sit?
There are three: Elementary Level for students currently in Grades 3–4, Middle Level for Grades 5–7, and Upper Level for Grades 8–11. Note the difference from the ISEE: the SSAT level follows the grade your child is in right now, while the ISEE level follows the grade they are applying to. Families preparing both tests mix this up more often than any other detail.
How much does the SSAT cost, and is that the same as tutoring?
No — they are two separate things. The registration fee is paid to E3n, and as of our last check it is $177 for a Middle or Upper Level Standard or school Flex test, $263 for SSAT at Home, $250 at a Prometric center, and $112 for the Elementary Level, with a $59 late fee and a $100 rush fee on paper Standard tests. GeniusPrep tutoring is separate: $150 for the one-time diagnostic, then $125 per session, billed session by session. Fee waivers for the test itself are requested from the schools you are applying to, not from us.
When will we get the scores back?
It depends on the format. Paper SSAT scores are usually released within two weeks of the test date. SSAT at Home scores usually arrive the Wednesday after the test. Prometric scores are released on the Wednesday following the Sunday that ends the scoring period. Plan backwards from your schools’ application deadlines — not from the test date.

How early should we start SSAT prep?
Three to six months before the sitting you intend to count. Because the SSAT allows several attempts within one testing year, a workable plan is to prepare properly, sit the test once with a real score target, and keep a later date in reserve rather than sitting repeatedly and hoping. Vocabulary and analogies are the parts that reward a long runway; pacing and penalty strategy can be fixed faster.
