About the school
Brooklyn Technical High School
Brooklyn · SHSAT required
Brooklyn Technical High School, located in Fort Greene, is the largest specialized high school in New York City and one of the largest public high schools in the United States. Brooklyn Tech admits students through the SHSAT composite score, and its cutoff has historically been the third-highest among the specialized high schools.
The school offers seventeen engineering and STEM-focused major tracks, plus a robust liberal-arts program, and is known for placing graduates into competitive engineering and science programs. Because Brooklyn Tech enrolls more students than any other specialized high school, its cutoff is typically more accessible than Stuyvesant or Bronx Science — but still requires strong, consistent SHSAT performance.
Why GeniusPrep
Built for Brooklyn Tech prep
Three things our prep does that generic test prep does not, tied to Brooklyn Tech's admissions specifics.
A reachable but firm cutoff
Brooklyn Tech's cutoff is meaningfully lower than Stuyvesant's, but it still requires a confident composite score. We plan against the Brooklyn Tech band specifically, not just a generic SHSAT pass mark.
Math depth, especially in algebra
Brooklyn Tech's engineering culture starts with rigorous math placement on day one. Students who arrive with strong SHSAT math fundamentals are better positioned for the school's major-track curriculum, and we build that foundation during prep.
A strategy for both ELA and Math
Students who lean strong in math sometimes lose Brooklyn Tech-band points on the ELA side. We balance prep across both sections so the composite holds up, regardless of which subject is your child's natural strength.
Methodology
Diagnostic, study plan, practice tests
Every student begins with a full-length diagnostic SHSAT under timed conditions. We score by section — Revising/Editing, Reading Comprehension, and Mathematics — and surface the specific question types where points are being left on the table.
From the diagnostic we build a written study plan tied to a target composite score. Sessions alternate between concept teaching, drilled question sets at the right difficulty, and short timed sprints that build pacing for the 180-minute / 57-question format.
Practice tests are scheduled every 3 to 4 weeks. We compare each result against the previous one, adjust the plan, and report progress to parents. By test day, students have completed multiple full-length practice sittings and know exactly what to expect.

Brooklyn Tech FAQ
Common questions about Brooklyn Tech prep
What is the SHSAT cutoff for Brooklyn Tech?+
Brooklyn Tech's SHSAT cutoff has historically been the third-highest among specialized high schools, typically landing in the high 400s on the composite scale. Because Brooklyn Tech enrolls a larger class than Stuyvesant or Bronx Science, its cutoff is generally more accessible — but the range still requires consistent performance across both ELA and Math.
How is Brooklyn Tech different from Stuyvesant or Bronx Science?+
All three admit through the SHSAT, but Brooklyn Tech is the largest by enrollment and offers seventeen STEM-focused major tracks. Cutoff-wise, Brooklyn Tech is typically the most accessible of the three. Curriculum-wise, it leans heavily into engineering and applied science. Many of our students rank all three on their SHSAT preference list.
When should my child start Brooklyn Tech SHSAT prep?+
We recommend 6 to 9 months of prep, beginning in the spring of 7th grade or summer before the fall test. That window gives time for two full practice-test cycles and a second pass through any math content the diagnostic flags as weak. Students with stronger fundamentals can sometimes start later, but earlier prep is the safer plan.
Does Brooklyn Tech require a separate application?+
No. Like the other test-based specialized high schools, Brooklyn Tech admits entirely on the SHSAT composite. Students rank Brooklyn Tech among their preferences on a single SHSAT application, and admissions are run in cutoff order based on the composite score.
