About the school

Staten Island Technical High School

Staten Island · SHSAT required

Staten Island Technical High School is the only specialized high school on Staten Island and admits students through the SHSAT composite. Despite being one of the smaller specialized high schools by enrollment, SI Tech's cutoff has historically been competitive — often near or above Brooklyn Tech in some years — driven by limited seat counts relative to applicant interest.

The school is known for engineering and applied technology programs, a collaborative project-based culture, and strong AP and advanced math offerings. Because SI Tech is geographically removed from the other specialized high schools, families on Staten Island often list it as a top preference, which keeps applicant demand strong year over year.

Why GeniusPrep

Built for Staten Island Tech prep

Three things our prep does that generic test prep does not, tied to Staten Island Tech's admissions specifics.

Cutoff awareness for a smaller school

Smaller class sizes can push cutoffs unexpectedly higher in stronger testing years. We plan against a competitive SI Tech target range, not the median of the eight specialized schools.

Strong math foundation, then strategy

SI Tech's engineering focus rewards students who arrive math-confident. Our prep builds the algebra, geometry, and reasoning fluency that pays off both on the SHSAT and in the school's coursework once admitted.

Online-friendly for Staten Island families

We run sessions from our Flatiron office and fully online, so Staten Island students can prep without losing two hours a week to commuting. Diagnostics and progress reports are identical either way.

Methodology

Diagnostic, study plan, practice tests

Every student begins with a full-length diagnostic SHSAT under timed conditions. We score by section — Revising/Editing, Reading Comprehension, and Mathematics — and surface the specific question types where points are being left on the table.

From the diagnostic we build a written study plan tied to a target composite score. Sessions alternate between concept teaching, drilled question sets at the right difficulty, and short timed sprints that build pacing for the 180-minute / 57-question format.

Practice tests are scheduled every 3 to 4 weeks. We compare each result against the previous one, adjust the plan, and report progress to parents. By test day, students have completed multiple full-length practice sittings and know exactly what to expect.

Staten Island Tech FAQ

Common questions about Staten Island Tech prep

What is the SHSAT cutoff for Staten Island Tech?+

Staten Island Tech's SHSAT cutoff has historically been competitive — often comparable to or slightly above Brooklyn Tech depending on the year. Because SI Tech enrolls a smaller class, its cutoff can swing more from year to year. We plan against a target range and aim to put your child solidly above the historical band.

Is Staten Island Tech a good option if we live off the island?+

Most SI Tech students live on Staten Island, but commuters from Brooklyn and other boroughs do attend. The commute is a real factor in family decisions. From a test-prep standpoint, listing SI Tech on the SHSAT preference form costs nothing — admissions runs in cutoff order regardless of geography.

When should we start SI Tech SHSAT prep?+

We recommend 6 to 9 months of prep, starting in the spring of 7th grade or early summer before the fall SHSAT. That timeline allows for two full practice-test cycles and time to firm up any weak math or ELA areas the diagnostic flags before the test date.

Do you offer online SHSAT prep for Staten Island families?+

Yes. Our online SHSAT track uses the same diagnostic, study plan, and practice-test schedule as in-person prep. Many Staten Island families pick online to avoid the commute to Manhattan during the school week, then come in person for full-length practice tests on weekends.
