ISEE Test Dates — seasons, deadlines, and how to find your seat

Read this first: there is no single national list of ISEE test dates.
E3n, which administers the ISEE, does not publish a fixed calendar. Every test site — each member school, each testing office, each Prometric center, and at-home sittings — opens its own dates. Any page showing you a tidy list of “2026 ISEE test dates” is either guessing or copying one test site's calendar. What is fixed, and what actually decides your plan, is the season structure below, the one-sitting-per-season rule, and the registration cut-offs.
ISEE Fall testing season
The Fall season ends Monday, November 30, 2026. One sitting per season. Standard registration closes 21 days before each test date — for a November 30 sitting, that is Monday, November 9, 2026.

What fits in that time
- A diagnostic first ($150, one-time, 2 hours). It shows where your child stands on the ISEE and which topics cost the most points, so no session goes to something already solid.
- Then sessions at $125 each, paid one at a time. That leaves 6 weeks after the diagnostic week for one-on-one sessions on the topics that cost the most points. No package to buy: after the diagnostic you get a written plan with the number of sessions it calls for, and you decide from there.

The calendar that is real
Three testing seasons, one sitting in each
E3n puts it plainly: a student may take the ISEE once per testing season — Fall, Winter and Spring/Summer — for a total of up to three times in a school year. A child who sits it in September must wait until December to sit it again.

Mostly used by families applying a cycle ahead, by rolling-admission schools, and by students who need a score on file for a mid-year or late transfer.
The season boundaries are set by E3n and do not move from year to year. The calendar years shown above are simply those boundaries applied to the 2026–2027 admissions cycle, for a child entering school in September 2027.

How far before the test date each format closes
There is no single cut-off date for the ISEE. Each cut-off is measured backwards from the test date you choose, and the online and paper formats behave differently.

Fees vary by test site, format and the grade your child is applying to, so we do not reproduce them here — we set them out site by site, alongside the rescheduling and fee-waiver rules, on our page on ISEE registration fees, format by format, and they are published by the test maker on the official ISEE registration page. Two policies are worth knowing before you pay: rescheduling is only possible before the test date and carries a fee, and a test cancelled more than 90 days after you paid is not refunded at all.
Where the dates actually live
Four kinds of test site, four separate calendars
This is the mechanical reason no national date list exists: each of these opens its own seats, on its own schedule, and only the registration portal knows what is free near you.

At home
Grades 2–12Remote administration, online format, individual testing. Proctored either by a trained member of staff at an E3n member school, or by an E3n proctor.
At a school
Grades 2–12In person at an E3n member school, on paper or online, usually in a group. Dates are set by the school, which is why they differ from one school to the next.
At a testing office
Grades 2–12Professional educational testing offices offering small-group or individual sittings. Availability, format and accommodations vary office by office — you contact them directly.
At a Prometric test center
Grades 5–12 onlyComputer-based, at a commercial test center. Note that Prometric centers are not reserved for the ISEE — other candidates will be testing alongside — and a parent or guardian must stay for the whole test.

A deadline is met by the report arriving, not by the test being taken. Count backwards from the earliest deadline on your list.

Reports arrive in your parent account and go automatically to every school you have named as a score recipient. You can remove a school from that list up until your child's test date — never after. Scores are reported as a scaled score from 760 to 940 per section, a percentile from 1 to 99, and a stanine from 1 to 9, all compared against students in the same grade who tested over the previous three years. How to choose your date
Four steps, in this order
Step one needs your schools' deadlines. Our list of NYC private schools and the test each one asks for gives the application deadline and whether it wants the ISEE, the SSAT or either, read on the school's own admissions page. Applying to Hunter College High School in 6th grade instead? Its January exam reuses two ISEE Middle Level math sections: check if your child can sit it.
Start from the application deadline, not the test date
Write down the earliest deadline on your school list. Subtract the score turnaround — up to ten days for a paper test. Subtract the registration cut-off for the format you want — 21 days for a paper sitting. That is the last date your child can realistically test, and it is usually earlier than families expect.
Pick the season, then find a seat
The season decides the strategy; the site decides the actual day. Open the ISEE registration portal, search by location and format, and look at what is genuinely available near you — seats at popular NYC sites go early in the Fall season.
Remember you only get one sitting per season
The ISEE allows one test per season and three per school year. A rushed, unprepared sitting does not just produce a weak score — it burns the season. This is the single most expensive mistake we see.
Decide your score recipients before test day
You can remove a school from your score recipient list up until your child’s test date. After they test, you cannot. Schools you leave on the list receive the complete report, including the unscored essay.
Sitting the SSAT instead, or as well? Its calendar works completely differently: fixed national Saturdays, each with its own late-fee and rush cut-off, inside a testing year running August 1 to July 31. What are the ISEE test dates for 2026 and 2027?
There is no single national list of ISEE test dates, and any site showing one is either guessing or reproducing the calendar of one test site. E3n, which administers the ISEE, does not publish a fixed date calendar: every test site — schools, testing offices, Prometric centers and at-home administrations — opens its own dates. What is fixed, and what actually governs your planning, is the season structure: Fall covers August through November, Winter covers December through March, and Spring/Summer covers April through July. Your child may sit the ISEE once in each of those, for a maximum of three sittings in a school year. To find a real date, search by location and format in the official ISEE registration portal.
How many times can my child take the ISEE in one year?
Three, at most — once per testing season. E3n states it plainly: a student who takes the exam in September, during the Fall season, must wait until December, the start of the Winter season, to sit it again. This is much tighter than the SSAT, which allows up to six paper Standard sittings inside a testing year, and it is why an unprepared ISEE sitting is genuinely costly: it does not just produce a low score, it consumes one of only three chances.
Which ISEE season should my child sit?
For a child applying to start in September 2027, the Fall season — August through November 2026 — is the default, because it puts a score in hand well before the December and January deadlines that most NYC independent schools use. The Winter season works as a second attempt if the Fall score lands below target, but only if your schools are still open in January or February; several are not. Always check each school’s stated deadline rather than assuming a common date, and remember the report has to arrive, not just the test to be taken.
How long does it take to get ISEE scores back?
Scores from online administrations are usually ready in three to five days; scores from paper administrations in five to ten. Reports are released in your parent account and go automatically to any school you have designated as a score recipient. You can remove a school from that list up until your child’s test date — but not after they have tested.
Is the ISEE the same organisation as ERB?
Yes, renamed. The ISEE was long associated with ERB and erblearn.org; its pages for families now send you to admission.org, and the organisation administering both the ISEE and the SSAT is E3n. If you are following instructions from an older guide or an old school handbook, some erblearn.org links in it still forward and some no longer open; the registration portal is where dates and seats actually live.
Do we need to travel for the ISEE, or can my child test at home?
At-home testing is available for all levels, Grades 2 through 12, remotely proctored and in the online format — so no travel at all. In-person options are the member school your child may already attend, professional testing offices offering small-group or individual sittings, and Prometric centers, which take Grades 5 through 12 only. Note that at a Prometric center a parent or guardian is required to stay for the duration of the test, with no exceptions.
