A neighborhood where the test is optional
Start with what is not required. LREI states it three times over, once for each division: no ECAA for Lower School applicants, no ISEE for middle school applicants, and no admissions test at all — ISEE or SSAT — for high school applicants entering in autumn 2027. The Washington Market School, on Hudson and Duane Streets, is a preschool and explains that it does not formally assess children at that age, so no child there is old enough for the SSAT in the first place. Avenues requires testing only for grades 9 to 12, calls it optional for grades 1 to 8, and says outright that it sets no minimum score in any form of standardized testing.
Three downtown schools do require a test, and all three accept the SSAT on the same footing as the ISEE. Grace Church School requires standardized testing for grades 5 to 8 and for grades 9 to 11, accepting either. Léman Manhattan requires testing for all applicants to grades 5 through 12, with its lower school at 41 Broad Street and its upper school on Morris Street, and gives both codes. BASIS Independent Manhattan lists the ISEE or the SSAT for grades 2 through 10, though neither of its campuses is actually downtown.
So a downtown family faces a genuinely different question from an uptown one. Uptown, the test is imposed and the work is figuring out which one. Here, for a list that stays local, there may be no test at all. The SSAT enters the picture when the list leaves the neighborhood — north to the Village and uptown, or out to the New England boarding schools, where the SSAT has been the standard admissions test for generations.
And even there the picture is less uniform than the reputation suggests, which is worth knowing before anyone spends a year preparing. Andover, Exeter, Hotchkiss and Taft all require a standardized test, and for ninth and tenth grade entry that means the SSAT or the ISEE. Choate Rosemary Hall does not: it states that testing is not required to apply and that it will decide on grades, transcript, courses, interview, recommendations and activities. Loomis Chaffee has dropped the requirement too, apart from English proficiency, and asks families to file a form saying whether they intend to submit anything. Two of the seven best-known names have stopped asking.

86 Fourth Avenue (JK–8); High School at 46 Cooper Square
Co-ed. Requires standardized testing for grades 5–8 and 9–11 and accepts ISEE or SSAT reports sent directly by the testing organisation. No test is required for Early Childhood or Lower School applicants.
Léman Manhattan Preparatory School
41 Broad Street (through grade 5); upper school on Morris Street
Co-ed. Testing required for all applicants to grades 5 through 12, with the choice of ISEE (code 336630) or SSAT (code 4572). Grades 2 to 4 sit the ECAA instead.
BASIS Independent Manhattan
Lower School 795 Columbus Avenue; Upper School 556 West 22nd Street
Co-ed, PreK–12. Lists the ISEE or the SSAT for applicants to grades 2 through 10. Neither campus is downtown, but it appears on enough downtown lists to belong here.
Every line above is quoted from the school’s own admissions page, read on 15 September 2026, and the boarding-school policies in the section above come from Andover, Exeter, Hotchkiss, Taft, Choate and Loomis Chaffee’s own admissions pages read the same day. This map is deliberately not exhaustive — plenty of uptown schools belong on a Tribeca list. Test policies have moved a great deal in the last three years in both directions: confirm with each admissions office before you commit to a testing season.

Preparing a test you chose rather than inherited
The test is the same everywhere in New York. What changes from one neighborhood to the next is the shape of the school list — and the list is what the plan is built around.
A wrong answer costs a quarter of a point, and that changes the training
On the Middle and Upper Levels, a correct answer earns one point, a wrong answer loses a quarter, and a skipped question costs nothing. E3N publishes the decision rule itself: avoid random guessing, but if you can eliminate two of the five choices, an educated guess is worth making. The ISEE has no penalty at all, which is why a student who has trained on ISEE material and then sits the SSAT tends to lose points on exactly the questions they were taught to attempt. Most of our downtown work on this is pacing and elimination discipline rather than content.
Four ways to sit it, and they are not equivalent
There are six Standard Saturday dates in the 2026-27 testing year, with limited Sunday sittings straight after each one for students who cannot test on a Saturday for reasons of religious observance. Middle and Upper Level candidates can also sit a computer-based test at a Prometric center, or at home if they are physically in the US or Canada on the day. And a Flex test can be given on any other date, but only by an E3N member school or an educational consultant, who may charge an administration fee on top of the registration. Which one you use changes your deadline, so it is settled first.
We say when a testing season has stopped being realistic
Scores reach families and schools within about three weeks of an administration. Downtown lists are the ones still moving in October, and that combination has a hard edge to it: a list that settles in December leaves very little room between the last useful sitting and a January file date. We map the practice-test cycle against the earliest deadline on your list rather than the average one, and we say plainly when the calendar no longer works instead of selling sessions into it.
Getting here
From Tribeca to 928 Broadway
Our center is at 928 Broadway in the Flatiron District, between 21st and 22nd Street, and from Tribeca it is the simplest trip of any neighborhood we serve. The R runs straight up Broadway from Canal Street to 23rd Street, and that station has an entrance on Broadway at 22nd Street — you come up one block from the door. The W does the same on weekdays.
A correction worth having, because it appears on the building’s own listings and in a good deal of downtown advice: the N and the Q do not stop at 23rd Street. Neither does the A. From Canal or Chambers Street it is the C that serves 23rd Street on Eighth Avenue, or the E from the World Trade Center. The 1 from Franklin Street is the other clean option and it is local the whole way: Franklin, Canal, Houston, Christopher Street-Stonewall, 14th, 18th, then 23rd — six stops.
That short ride is why a disproportionate share of our downtown families choose in person over online. Sessions run after school on weekdays and on weekend mornings; the online program is available and identical, but here it tends to be the exception rather than the rule.

- 1From Franklin Street or Canal Street. Local the whole way up Seventh Avenue — six stops to 23rd Street, then a short walk east along 23rd.
- C / EFrom Chambers Street, Canal Street or World Trade Center. Up Eighth Avenue to 23rd Street, then east across to Broadway. The A skips this station; take the C.

What Tribeca parents ask us
If downtown schools do not require a test, why would we sit the SSAT at all?+
Because of where the list goes rather than where you live. LREI requires no test at any level, Avenues makes it optional below ninth grade, and Washington Market has no pupils old enough. But Grace Church, Léman and BASIS do require one and accept the SSAT, and the New England boarding schools are the SSAT’s home ground. Downtown families who sit this test are almost always applying outward. If your list stays inside the neighborhood, it is a fair question whether you need it at all, and we will say so.
Do the New England boarding schools still require the SSAT?+
Most of the best-known ones do, and two no longer do. Andover requires a standardized test and accepts the SSAT among several. Exeter requires the Upper Level SSAT or ISEE for ninth-grade entry. Hotchkiss requires the SSAT or ISEE for grades 9 and 10. Taft requires testing of all applicants. But Choate Rosemary Hall states that testing is not required to apply, and Loomis Chaffee has dropped the requirement except for English proficiency and asks families to declare their intention either way. Check each school on your own list rather than assuming.

Our list is still moving. How late can we start?+
Three to six months before the sitting you intend to use is the honest window, and downtown lists are the ones most likely to still be shifting into the autumn. Scores take around three weeks to reach schools, so a list that settles in October generally still has a usable sitting; one that settles in December usually does not, for a January file date. We will tell you which of those you are in rather than take the sessions and let you find out.
