Genius Prep does not run group courses: every session is private. Manhattan Review’s prices above come from its New York SAT page; its New York ISEE page and New York SSAT page list the same amounts.
What is not in these tables
A price is here only if we read it on the provider’s own page. The Princeton Review shows $167 to $180 an hour on its SHSAT page, but its pricing statement says prices depend on the region, and we could not confirm the New York figure, so it is not in the tables.
Estimates are not prices, either. SHSATlab, an online prep product, estimates NYC SHSAT tutors at $80 to $200 an hour. That is a competitor’s estimate, not a survey. Companies that ask you to call for a quote do not appear at all.
Before spending anything on the SHSAT, the city’s four practice tests are free: official SHSAT practice tests, with a checker that marks them.
Questions about the cost
How much does private tutoring cost in NYC?
The hourly prices published by the NYC providers we read on November 8, 2026 run from $75 to $250. The lowest is a full-year enrollment option, and the highest is the upper of two tutor grades at one company. On Wyzant, where each tutor sets a price, the first ten tutors listed for SHSAT in New York City asked $70 to $325 an hour that day.
What does Genius Prep charge?
$125 a session for grades 4 to 12 and test prep, $100 a session for grades K to 3, $180 a session with the director, and a one-time $150 diagnostic of 1.5 hours. There are no packages and no contracts.
Is a group course cheaper than a private tutor?
Per hour, yes on these published prices: the group courses that state their hours work out to between $33.32 and $60 an hour, under every published one-on-one rate. The total can still be higher, because a course buys many more hours than most families would book privately. A class also follows its own pace and schedule, so the choice is about the child as much as the price.
Will more hours mean a higher score?
Nobody can promise that, and this page does not. The calculator counts money and time. It says nothing about what a given number of hours will do for a given child.
