A neighborhood that applies outward
Tribeca’s own independent schools skew early-childhood. The Washington Market School, the neighborhood’s best-known independent, runs its preschool programs out of 55 Hudson Street and 134 Duane Street. By the grades the ISEE actually covers — entry into grade 5 and above — most Tribeca families are applying somewhere other than Tribeca.
Where they apply is the interesting part, because it is not one direction. Some go a few blocks north to the Village and Union Square: Grace Church School at 86 Fourth Avenue, with its high school at 46 Cooper Square, or LREI at 272 Sixth Avenue and 40 Charlton Street. Some go south to the Financial District, where Léman Manhattan runs a lower school at 41 Broad Street and an upper school at 1 Morris Street. Some go uptown, to the same East Side and West Side schools their neighbors on 89th Street are applying to. And a meaningful share of downtown families look at boarding schools.
That outward spread is what actually complicates a downtown application, and it has very little to do with the test itself. Four destinations mean four sets of tour dates, four deadlines, and four admissions offices whose entry grades do not line up: a school taking its largest outside cohort at grade 5 and one taking it at grade 7 put two different ISEE levels on the same family’s calendar. Downtown lists are also the ones still moving in October, when uptown lists have long since settled. So we fix the list first — the level, the testing season and the whole schedule follow from it, and the ISEE allows one sitting per season.

Why we start with the list, not the test
The test is the same everywhere in New York. What changes from one neighborhood to the next is the shape of the school list — and the list is what the plan is built around.
The list decides the level and the season, not the reverse
The ISEE splits into Lower, Middle and Upper Level by the grade your child is applying to enter — not by their age or current grade. A downtown list spanning two entry grades can put two levels in play, and the ISEE allows one sitting per testing season. A list that is still moving in October can quietly cost you a whole window. We settle the list first and register second.
Four calendars, one child
A Village school, a Financial District school and an uptown school run their tours, interviews and deadlines on their own schedules, and none of them coordinates with the others. We map the practice-test cycle against the earliest deadline on your list rather than the average one, so the last full-length sitting lands before the first application closes rather than in the middle of the run.
Downtown families are often running two tracks at once
Plenty of Tribeca families keep a strong public-school option live while the private applications go out, and the admissions timelines do not politely take turns. We schedule around that instead of pretending the private track is the only thing on the calendar, and we say plainly when a testing season is no longer realistic rather than selling you sessions into it.
Getting here
From Tribeca to 928 Broadway
Of the three Manhattan neighborhoods we serve most, Tribeca has the shortest trip to us. The N and R run up Broadway from Canal Street and stop at 23rd Street — the station exit is on Broadway, one block from 928 Broadway. Most families put the door-to-door trip at ten to fifteen minutes.
That short ride is the reason a disproportionate share of our downtown families choose in person over online. Sessions run after school on weekdays and on weekend mornings; the online program is available and identical, but it tends to be the exception here rather than the rule.
- N / RFrom Canal Street. Straight up Broadway to 23rd Street. The exit puts you on Broadway, one block from the door.
- 1From Franklin Street or Canal Street. Up Seventh Avenue to 23rd Street, then a short walk east along 23rd.
- A / C / EFrom Chambers Street or Canal Street. Up Eighth Avenue to 23rd Street, then east across to Broadway.

What Tribeca parents ask us
Our list spans several schools. Which ISEE level does my child sit?+
The level follows the grade your child is applying to enter: Lower Level for grades 5 and 6, Middle Level for 7 and 8, Upper Level for 9 and above. Downtown lists span two entry grades more often than uptown ones do, so confirm with each admissions office which cohort it is admitting your child into before you register. This is the most expensive avoidable mistake we see downtown, because the ISEE allows one sitting per testing season.
Are there independent schools in Tribeca itself for ISEE-age children?+
Tribeca’s own independent schools skew early-childhood — the Washington Market School, on Hudson and Duane Streets, is a preschool. Families applying at grade 5 and above are generally looking north to the Village and Union Square, south to the Financial District, uptown, or to Brooklyn and boarding schools.
Our list is still moving. How late can we start?+
Three to six months before the sitting you intend to use is the honest window, and downtown lists are the ones most likely to still be shifting into the autumn. A list that settles in October usually still has a season available; one that settles in December usually does not, because the ISEE allows one sitting per testing season. How long is the trip from Tribeca to your center?+
Ten to fifteen minutes on the N or R from Canal Street, which runs straight up Broadway to 23rd Street and puts you out one block from 928 Broadway. It is the shortest commute of any neighborhood we serve regularly, which is why most downtown families come in person.
