Chemistry Regents Tutoring — the Physical Setting Exam
New York is running two chemistry Regents at the same time, and their raw score ranges overlap. The first job is making sure you are preparing the right one. The second is the tables.

There are two chemistry Regents. Which one is your child sitting?
The quickest test is the raw total printed on the paper. If it is out of 85, it is this exam. If it is out of 48, it is the new one. Because the two ranges overlap completely from 0 to 48, a score read on the wrong chart looks perfectly plausible and is simply wrong.

The one Regents where you can plan against a number
Most Regents curves wander. Geometry’s pass line has moved seven raw points over the years. Chemistry’s has barely moved at all — which is bad news and good news in the same sentence.

The bad news is the height of the bar. Around 59% of the raw points for a bare pass is the most demanding threshold of any exam on this site — there is no generous curve waiting to rescue a student who wrote off a unit.
The good news is that it is honest. On Chemistry we can tell a family in October what the target is in raw points and be confident it will still be true in June, which is not something we can promise on Geometry or Algebra I. Every plan we write for this exam is denominated that way.
The Reference Tables are not a crutch. They are the exam.
Your child walks in with the Reference Tables for Physical Setting/Chemistry supplied to them. Everyone knows this. Almost nobody trains for it, and the training is the difference between a student who spends ninety seconds finding a value and one who spends fifteen.
So the first sessions are not content review. They are pairing: this family of question, that table, that row. Solubility questions, heat and phase change, the activity series, polyatomic ions, the constants. We drill the lookup until it is automatic, and only then work on the calculation the lookup was feeding.
Where students still lose marks after that is the written half: explaining, in a sentence a marker can score, why a reaction goes the way it does. Chemistry rewards the same skill Living Environment did — saying the mechanism out loud — and it is the last thing most revision covers.
The current tables are published by the State Education Department at nysed.gov, and every past paper with its scoring key is free at nysedregents.org. Editions are revised, so we link rather than host a copy that would quietly go stale.

Is the Chemistry Regents being discontinued?
Physical Setting: Chemistry has an announced final administration of June 2027, under New York’s implementation schedule for the new science Regents. That is not the same as "discontinued now": January 2027 and June 2027 are still to be sat, and students preparing for them are preparing for a real exam. The replacement, Physical Science: Chemistry, has been running alongside it since June 2026.
How do I know which chemistry Regents my child is taking?
Ask the school, and check the raw total on any practice paper you have been given. Physical Setting: Chemistry is scored out of 85 raw points; Physical Science: Chemistry is scored out of 50. If a past paper or a score report is out of 85, it belongs to the older exam. The two overlap completely between 0 and 50, so nothing will warn you if you use the wrong chart.
How many points does my child need to pass Chemistry?
On this exam, unusually, you can plan against a number. Across all 30 published charts from June 2014 to August 2026, a 65 has required between 49 and 51 raw points out of 85, and an 85 between 74 and 76. The curve has effectively not moved in twelve years, which makes it the most predictable target of any Regents we prepare.
Is Chemistry harder than the other science Regents?
It asks for more of the paper than any other exam we cover: roughly 59% of the raw points for a simple pass, against about 47% on Living Environment and 42% on Earth and Space Sciences. Whether that makes it "harder" depends on the student, but it does mean there is very little slack, and a strategy of skipping a topic entirely does not survive contact with this exam.
What is the state lab requirement?
New York requires satisfactory completion of laboratory work before a student may sit a Physical Setting science Regents, and the details are administered by the school. It is a school matter, not a tutoring one — but check it early, because it is the sort of thing families discover in May.
