Free — College Board’s scale, the DOE’s averages

The PSAT came back. How far is it from your school’s SAT?

A PSAT score sits on the same scale as the SAT. Enter it, pick your high school, and see the SAT level it points to today, the average SAT at that school in 2024, the gap between the two, and where the score falls against all 461 New York City public high schools that reported an average.

Which PSAT was it?

Enter the total score from the report. Add the school to see the gap to its average; without one, the score is placed against all 461 schools.

What College Board actually says, word for word

“Suppose a student took a PSAT-related assessment and the SAT on the same day. With vertical scaling, they would be expected to get the same score on both tests.”
“When a student takes the SAT at least six months after taking a PSAT-related assessment, their scores generally increase by 20 points in each section (Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing), 40 points total.”

The range this tool shows runs between those two sentences and nothing else. The second still names the verbal section by its pre-digital title, “Evidence-Based Reading and Writing”; today it is called Reading and Writing. Score scales: PSAT/NMSQT 320–1520, PSAT 10 320–1520 and PSAT 8/9 240–1440, against 400–1600 for the SAT. Your report also prints a score range of its own: how much the score would likely vary on another sitting under the same conditions. Read the result above with that in mind.

School averages come from the NYC high school SAT scoreboard, built from NYC Open Data — School Quality Reports, Multi-Year Metrics (New York City Department of Education, NYC Open Data — public domain, attribution requested), rebuilt 2026-09-15. They are the 2024 averages of the students each school counted as having sat the SAT; the city figure, 979, weights every one of those 53,619 students equally. Schools with no 2024 figure are left out rather than compared on an older year. College Board sources checked 2026-09-30.

Questions families actually ask

Does a PSAT score predict an SAT score?

The PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, PSAT 8/9 and SAT share one vertical scale. College Board writes that a student who took a PSAT and the SAT on the same day would be expected to get the same score on both, and that when the SAT comes at least six months later, scores generally increase by 20 points per section, 40 in total. That is the whole of what it publishes, and it is what this tool uses.

Why is the PSAT out of 1520 and not 1600?

Because the PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 have a lower ceiling on the same scale: 320 to 1520, against 400 to 1600 for the SAT. The PSAT 8/9 runs from 240 to 1440. A 1200 on any of them is read as a 1200 on the SAT scale.

What does my high school’s average SAT actually measure?

It is the average of the students at that school who sat the SAT and whom the NYC Department of Education counted that year. It is not the whole class, and at a small school a handful of students can move it by thirty points. Comparing one student with it tells you where the student stands against what the school produces, not a percentile.

Is 40 points all my child can gain before the SAT?

No. It is what College Board says scores generally do on their own when six months or more separate the two tests. It is not a ceiling and it is not a promise. Points beyond it come from working on the specific skills the score report shows were missed.
