What every NYC high school actually averages on the SAT

Every figure on this page and on the 499 school pages comes from one place: the School Quality Reports multi-year metrics published by the New York City Department of Education on NYC Open Data. It is a long-format table of about 1.49 million rows, one row per school, year and metric. We read four metrics out of it: average SAT Math, average SAT Reading and Writing, and the share of test takers who met the College Board’s college-readiness benchmark on each section.

We deliberately do not publish a fifth metric the dataset carries, the share of the four-year cohort that sat the SAT. It is reported for 550 schools in 2017 and 2018 and for fewer than sixty from 2019 onward. A column filled in for one school in ten would sort this table by missing data rather than by anything real.

Nothing is interpolated, smoothed or carried over. Where a school did not report a score for a year, that year is simply absent from its curve. Where a school reported one section but not the other, no 1600-point total is shown. The pipeline that builds this page refuses to publish at all if one of the four metrics disappears from the source, if a value falls outside the 200-800 band the SAT uses, or if one of five reference figures we checked by hand moves without explanation.

A last caution, because it decides how you should read the table. These are averages of the students at a school who chose to sit the SAT. They are not a measure of teaching. A selective school that admits the city’s strongest eighth graders will average high whatever happens in its classrooms, and a school of sixty test takers can move thirty points because five students had a good morning.
