New York’s newest science Regents has 5 published conversion charts in total. Preparing for an exam with that little history is a different job, and pretending otherwise is how families waste a term.

Read the first column down. The pass line has already moved three raw points in five sittings, and on a fifty-point paper three points is six percent of the exam. On Chemistry, with thirty charts behind it, that line has moved by one. This is what a young exam looks like: the standard is still settling, and a student aiming exactly at the line is betting on which paper they draw.
How you prepare when there are almost no past papers
Standard Regents revision is a back catalogue: do twenty old papers, meet every question type four times, recognise them in June. That method is unavailable here, so we run three different ones.
Spend the scarce papers deliberately
A student who burns all the released papers in October has nothing left for a timed rehearsal in May. We ration them: one early as a diagnostic, the rest held back and used under real conditions, and the topic drilling done on other material.
Work on data, not recall
Earth and space questions lean on maps, cross-sections, graphs and tables — reading a profile, comparing two data sets, saying what a trend implies. That skill transfers across question types the student has never seen, which is exactly what you want when you cannot predict the paper.
Train fluency with the supplied tables
Whatever reference material the State issues for the exam, the marks go to the student who can find a value in seconds rather than minutes. Table navigation is drillable independently of which questions turn up, so it is safe investment on a young exam.
What we do not know yet, said out loud
Five sittings is not enough to know where this exam’s pass line settles, which topics it leans on year after year, or how it will treat a borderline student in the long run. We track it — the curve history is updated every time New York publishes a chart — but we are not going to dress up a five-point series as a trend.
What we will say is the operational consequence, because it is the same in every case: build a margin. On an exam whose standard is still moving, the difference between aiming at 65 and aiming at 75 is the difference between a plan and a gamble. The bar on the August 2026 chart was 21 out of 50; we build plans a few points above whatever the latest one says.

Questions about a new exam
Is this the same as the old Earth Science Regents?
It is a different exam with a different scoring scale, and the quickest check is the raw total. Every conversion chart New York has published for Earth and Space Sciences is out of 50 raw points. If a paper, a chart or a score report in your hands is out of 85, it does not belong to this exam and the conversion you get from it will be wrong. Which exam your child sits is set by the school and the State — ask the counsellor if you are unsure.
How many points are needed to pass?
On the five published charts, a 65 has taken between 21 and 24 raw points out of 50, and an 85 between 36 and 39. Note the spread: three raw points on a 50-point paper is six percent of it, which is a wider swing in relative terms than most older exams show. On a new exam, aiming exactly at the line is a poor bet.
Are there past papers to practise on?
Far fewer than for any other science Regents — the exam has only been administered since June 2025. That is the single biggest practical difference in preparing for it, and any tutor who implies otherwise is selling you something. What we do instead is described on this page.
Are reference tables still supplied?
New York supplies reference tables for its Physical Setting sciences and publishes the current editions itself; which tables apply to this exam, and in which edition, is set by the State and revised from time to time. Check the current science reference tables on nysed.gov rather than relying on a copy printed in a revision book, and bring whatever your child’s school has issued to the first session.
Should we wait a year until there are more past papers?
No — your child sits the exam when their course says they do, and the exam is not harder for being new. The honest answer is that preparation looks different: more work on how the questions are built and on reading data, less drilling of a familiar back catalogue.
