The official ACT to SAT table

Each ACT Composite matches a range of SAT totals, and one SAT score within it for a single-point comparison. Read the other way, any SAT total inside a range concords to that ACT Composite. In ACT’s words: “These tables compare scores but do not predict performance on the other test.”

Tables A1 and A2 of the College Board and ACT — Guide to the 2018 ACT/SAT Concordance, the same values as ACT — Official Concordance Tables. Since September 2025 the ACT Composite is the average of English, math and reading, with science optional (ACT — Understanding Your ACT Scores); the 2018 table was built when it still counted science, and ACT still publishes it as the official comparison. All three checked 2026-10-27. School averages come from the NYC high school SAT scoreboard (New York City Department of Education, 2024 averages, city average 979).

Questions families actually ask

How do I know whether my child should take the SAT or the ACT?

Sit one full practice test of each, under timed conditions, and compare the two totals on the official concordance table. The test with the higher concorded score is the stronger one today. When both land on the same row, the table calls them the same level: then the choice comes down to the dates, and the test your child is more comfortable with. ACT writes that colleges accept both exams equally.

Is the 2018 concordance table still valid?

It is the one ACT and College Board still publish. ACT’s own page says the latest version was released in 2018 and is not updated annually. Two things have changed since: the SAT went digital in 2024 on the same 400–1600 scale, and since September 2025 the ACT Composite is the average of English, math and reading, with science optional. The table was built when the Composite still counted science.

Can I use a PSAT score instead of an SAT practice test?

Yes. The PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10 and PSAT 8/9 sit on the SAT’s scale, and College Board writes that a student who took a PSAT and the SAT on the same day would be expected to get the same score on both. The tool reads a PSAT as a same-day SAT, and shows College Board’s general +40 for an SAT taken six months or more later.

Why does the tool stop below 590 on the SAT or 9 on the ACT?

Because the official table stops there. Below an SAT total of 590 or an ACT Composite of 9, College Board and ACT publish no comparison, and we do not make one up.

Only a PSAT so far? The PSAT vs school SAT tool reads it against your high school alone. How we prepare each test: SAT prep and ACT prep. Everything else is in the free tools hub.
